Scotia Accounting and Tax Services began in 2007 and has recently opened an office in the Stellarton Professional Centre in Stellarton. Although the business is new, I have over 17 years experience in the accounting profession and have been a member of the Certified General Accountants Association of Nova Scotia since 1995. I'm a Pictou County native and a business graduate of Saint Mary's University in Halifax.

2008 2nd Quarter CRA Interest Rates - These rates are calculated quarterly in accordance with applicable legislation and will be in effect from April 1, 2008, to June 30, 2008.
Income taxes - The interest rate charged on overdue taxes, Canada Pension Plan contributions, and Employment Insurance Premiums will be 8%.
The interest rate paid on overpayments will be 6%.
The interest rate used to calculate taxable benefits for employees and shareholders from interest-free and low-interest loans will be 4%.
When Are My Taxes Due? - Many of the dates by which a taxpayer must take action under the specific provisions of the Income Tax Act vary with the action to be undertaken.
Filing deadlines
Time limits:
- Individuals-April 30, or June 15 if the taxpayer carries on a business (other than through a tax shelter)
- Deceased individuals-where the individual dies before October, April 30 or June 15, as above. Where the individual dies after September, 6 months following death
- Trusts-March 31 for inter vivos trusts. No later than 12 months following death for testamentary trusts, and annually thereafter
- Corporations-6 months following the end of the taxation year

Upcoming Personal Tax deadlines
The deadline to file your 2007 personal income tax return is April 30 except for unincorporated small businesses. All tax owing must be paid by that date to avoid interest charges.
For taxpayers who operate unincorporated small businesses, or who have a spouse or common-law partner who carries on such a business, the deadline is June 15. If there is a balance owing at June 15, interest will be charged back to May 1st. Therefore, it pays to ensure that tax due has been remitted by April 30 even though the return is filed later.
